Stop Using Palm Oil, Groundnut Oil as Sexual Lubricants, Medical Expert Warns
By Chibuzo Obidike
A Senior Manager for Prevention Programmes at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Taofeek Adeleye, has warned Nigerians against using palm oil, groundnut oil, vegetable oil and other oil based substances as sexual lubricants.
Adeleye gave the warning on Thursday, August 20, during a national training for media personnel on HIV Pre Exposure Prophylaxis, PrEP, in Lagos.
According to him, people should use water based lubricants, particularly where condoms are involved, instead of household oils or other unapproved substances.
He also advised sexually active persons to use condoms that properly fit, stressing the importance of choosing the appropriate size.
Adeleye said where a suitable lubricant is unavailable, people should seek safer alternatives rather than resorting to inappropriate oil based substances.
He urged Nigerians to obtain accurate sexual health information from qualified healthcare professionals to reduce the risk of infections and other complications.
