The Anambra State Government has sealed Arrow of God Children’s Home in Nkwelle Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area, over poor service delivery and unhygienic conditions, with eight children rescued from the facility.
The Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Children’s Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, disclosed this on Saturday while inspecting the orphanage to assess its operational standards and the welfare of children under its care.
Onyekesi said the facility fell below prescribed standards, while its unhygienic environment raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of the children.
“The Arrow of God Children’s Home, Nwelle Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area, is operating below the required standards, with an unhygienic environment posing concerns for the welfare of the children,” she said.
She confirmed that the inspection team had sealed the facility, owned by retired Lieutenant Colonel Deborah Ogoo, over its failure to comply with regulatory requirements.
“This home is hereby sealed by the inspection team over its failure to meet the prescribed standards,” the commissioner stated.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that eight children were rescued from the facility.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting children and ensuring that residential care facilities provide safe, clean and conducive environments.
She stressed that no children’s home would be allowed to compromise the safety, dignity and well-being of children entrusted to its care.
The development raises questions about the monitoring of residential childcare facilities and the measures required to ensure that vulnerable children receive proper care and protection.
