Army Chief Raises Alarm Over Low South-East Recruitment, Begs Igbo Youths to Join Army

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has expressed concern over the persistently low enlistment of youths from the South-East into the Nigerian Army.

Shaibu spoke during the passing-out parade of the pioneer batch of 90 regular recruits at the Nigerian Army Recruit Training Depot, Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State.

The Army Chief noted that while youths from other parts of the country compete fiercely for limited recruitment slots, the quota allocated to the South-East has remained largely unfilled for years.

Describing the situation as unacceptable, Shaibu appealed to traditional rulers, parents, community leaders and other stakeholders to encourage eligible youths, both male and female, to take advantage of military recruitment opportunities.

He said military service goes beyond a career, describing it as an honourable call to patriotism, leadership and national service.

> “Encourage your youths to take their rightful place in the defence of our fatherland. The recruitment quota allocated to this zone has not been fully utilised. This should not continue,” the Army Chief said.

Shaibu urged South-East communities to regard the Amasiri-Edda training depot as their own and encourage more young people to enlist and contribute to national defence.
