Police Arrest Two Suspected Armed Robbers, Recover Firearm in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers and recovered a firearm following a robbery attack on motorists along the Oyo Iwo Expressway in Afijio Local Government Area.

According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 5, after armed robbers barricaded the highway near Akoda Village and attacked travellers returning from a market in Iwo. Several victims were dispossessed of their valuables, while others sustained machete injuries.

Acting on a distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, deployed operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit to the scene. The team rescued victims, secured the area, and recovered a single barrel gun and two clubs believed to have been used by the suspects.

Intelligence led investigations later resulted in the arrest of two suspects identified as Abubakar Jape and Sheu Dengi. Police said both men confessed to participating in the robbery and were identified by victims during an identification parade. A search of one suspect’s hideout also led to the recovery of a rechargeable torch stolen from one of the victims.

The Commissioner of Police commended the swift response of the operatives and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of the gang still at large. He also urged the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support the fight against crime and improve security across Oyo State.
