Optometrist Raises Alarm Over Preventable Blindness, Offers Free Eye Tests In Anambra

AWKA — The Chief Optometrist and CEO of COV-OPTICS Eye Hospital, Awka, Dr Chikodi Oranuka, has urged Nigerians to prioritise regular eye examinations, warning that some serious eye conditions can develop silently and cause irreversible vision loss.
Oranuka spoke during the unveiling of COV-OPTICS’ new South East headquarters at Okpuno, Awka, where he announced two weeks of free eye tests for residents of Awka and surrounding communities.
He said early detection of conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic eye disease could prevent avoidable blindness, stressing that people should not wait until their eyesight begins to deteriorate before seeking professional care.
According to him, poor awareness, financial constraints and delayed treatment remain major challenges in eye care. He therefore encouraged residents to take advantage of the free screening and make regular eye checks part of their routine healthcare.
Oranuka also disclosed that the hospital has modern diagnostic equipment and runs the Cove Eye Care Foundation, which provides subsidised eye care for vulnerable patients.
