What began as a disagreement over an inherited Ube tree in Ihiala has reportedly ended in the death of a man, leaving a family and community in shock.
The incident reportedly occurred at Umuakpa, Umudara, in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, where two brothers, identified as Nnamdi Igbanu and Eugene Igbanu, were said to have clashed over the use of a tree they jointly inherited.
Reports indicate that their kinsmen had allocated portions of land to both brothers, with the Ube tree marking the boundary. They were reportedly instructed to own the tree jointly.
Trouble allegedly started on November 2 when Eugene cut branches from the tree to make firewood for sale. His brother, Nnamdi, and Nnamdi’s wife reportedly challenged him, arguing that the tree and its proceeds belonged to both of them.
The argument allegedly turned violent, with Nnamdi and his wife accused of using pieces of firewood to assault Eugene. He reportedly died following the confrontation.
Villagers who arrived after hearing about the incident reportedly found Eugene’s body, while Nnamdi and his wife were said to have fled.
Angered by the development, some residents reportedly descended on Nnamdi’s house and destroyed it.
There is, however, no confirmed information yet on the arrest of the alleged suspects or an official police account of the incident.
A dispute over a tree and its firewood has reportedly cost a man his life. No inheritance, no matter how valuable, should ever become a reason for violence.
