Anambra State Govt, WHO Explore Stronger Partnership to Tackle Environmental Health Risks
The Anambra State Government is exploring a stronger partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) to tackle environmental challenges and prevent avoidable public health risks across the state.
The move followed a meeting between the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, and the WHO State Coordinator in Anambra, Dr. Bonos Mohammed, who led a delegation to the Ministry.
Dr. Mohammed commended Aguiyi for his proactive response to environmental challenges and assured the Ministry of WHO’s readiness to support interventions that could improve environmental health and sustainability in Anambra.
For Dr. Aguiyi, the partnership comes at a critical time, particularly as parts of the state continue to face the environmental consequences of flooding.
The Commissioner warned that contaminated wells, boreholes and other water sources could expose affected communities to waterborne diseases, stressing that environmental protection and public health are closely connected.
He explained that poor environmental practices can create conditions for preventable diseases and public health emergencies, while also threatening the sustainability of human, animal and plant life.
Aguiyi said the Ministry had already begun measures to manage the environmental and health risks associated with the recent flooding, but noted that technical expertise, innovative solutions and intervention support from development partners would further strengthen the state’s response.
He expressed appreciation to WHO for its interest in supporting Anambra and said the Ministry remained open to partnerships capable of delivering practical solutions to the state’s environmental challenges.
The proposed collaboration aligns with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s vision of building a clean, green, healthy and sustainable Anambra, while strengthening the connection between environmental management and the protection of public health.
