Anambra Govt Demolishes Shanties, Illegal Structures in Ozubulu, Nnewi

The Anambra State Government has intensified its crackdown on shanties and illegal structures, with demolition exercises carried out in parts of Ozubulu and Nnewi as authorities step up efforts to restore order and protect public spaces.

Officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on Saturday, August 8, 2026, demolished shanties and other illegal structures within the perimeter of the Joint Hospital, Ozubulu.

The exercise was carried out as part of the state’s enforcement of physical planning regulations and efforts to safeguard government facilities and public spaces from unauthorised development.

The ministry said the action was necessary to prevent disorderly development and promote a safer and better planned urban environment.

It warned that structures erected without the required approvals or on land reserved for public use would not be allowed to remain.

The enforcement operation was also extended to Nnewi, where officials under the ministry’s Operation Zero Shanties initiative demolished shanties and illegal structures along the Traffic Light axis.

According to the ministry, the Nnewi exercise was aimed at reclaiming public spaces, restoring order and ensuring that physical development within the area conforms to approved planning standards.

The latest operations form part of the state government’s wider urban renewal and physical planning enforcement efforts across Anambra.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing building and development regulations, stressing that the objective is to create a cleaner, safer, more organised and sustainable environment for residents and businesses across the state.
