Anambra Bans Parallel New Yam, Iwa Ji Celebrations

The Anambra State Government has banned the parallel celebration of the New Yam Festival, Iwa Ji, Iri Ji or any other name by which the traditional harvest festival is known across communities in the state.

The directive was contained in a letter addressed to all President Generals and traditional rulers by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The government said its attention had been drawn to what it described as unlawful actions by some individuals and groups who organise parallel New Yam celebrations in some communities, allegedly contrary to the customs and traditions governing the festivals.

According to the state government, it is unlawful for any individual or group to organise a New Yam or Iwa Ji celebration before the date fixed by the traditional ruler or on the same date as the traditional ruler’s official celebration.

The government warned that such practices amount to an attempt to unlawfully usurp the traditional rights of traditional rulers and could create tension capable of leading to a breakdown of law and order in affected communities.

Consequently, the state government directed that no individual or group should henceforth organise or hold New Yam, Iwa Ji, Iri Ji or similar celebrations before the traditional ruler’s official celebration or on the same date.

The government urged traditional rulers and community leaders to ensure strict compliance with the directive and preserve the customs, traditions and peaceful coexistence of their communities.

The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs.
