Anambra Commissions Four Speed Boats to Boost Riverine Transportation in Anambra West
The Anambra State Government has commissioned four new speed boats to improve transportation, safety and accessibility across riverine communities in Anambra West Local Government Area.
The boats were commissioned on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Odotemaka Riverside, Nzam, by the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Obiefuna Ibuzo, alongside the leadership of Anambra West Local Government Area.
The commissioning ceremony coincided with the birthday of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and was attended by traditional rulers, government officials, community leaders and other stakeholders.
Among those present were His Royal Highness, Commander Raymond Omorja, Igwe of Owere; His Royal Majesty, Joseph Ajodo, Igwe of Ukwara; and His Royal Highness, Joseph Aluukwu, Igwe of Nzam.
Speaking at the event, the Mayor of Anambra West Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs. Edith Nkeiru Ndive, popularly known as Mmadiche, reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of residents through investments that address the peculiar transportation needs of riverine communities.
Commissioner Ibuzo described the project as part of Governor Soludo’s broader vision of developing an integrated and efficient transportation system capable of connecting communities across the state.
He said the expansion of safe and reliable water transportation remained a priority of the Ministry of Transport, noting that investment in modern marine infrastructure would improve mobility, stimulate economic activities, promote tourism and contribute to sustainable development in riverine communities.
As part of efforts to strengthen security and accountability on the waterways, the Commissioner also launched a QR Code boat identification initiative, beginning with the four newly commissioned speed boats.
According to him, the initiative would enhance the identification and monitoring of boats while strengthening regulation, security and effective management of water transportation across Anambra State.
Residents, government officials, traditional rulers and other stakeholders at the ceremony commended the initiative, describing the provision of the speed boats as a significant intervention for communities whose daily activities depend heavily on water transportation.
The development is expected to improve movement between riverine communities while supporting commercial activities and enhancing access to essential services in Anambra West.
