Allegations of Human Rights Abuses Trail Anambra Security Outfits.

Fresh allegations of human rights violations have been levelled against operatives of Operation Udo Ga Achi (Udogachi) and the Agunechemba security outfits in Anambra State, with victims and rights advocates accusing some operatives of unlawful killings, torture, extortion, arbitrary arrests, prolonged detention and destruction of property.

The allegations, contained in reports by victims, relatives and legal representatives, have renewed calls for independent investigations into the activities of the security outfits established under the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025 to combat insecurity across the state.

Among the cases highlighted is that of a widow from Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area, who alleged that operatives shot her son in both legs after she rejected romantic advances from a local commander.

She claimed that the operatives assaulted members of her family, damaged property and later transported them to the local government secretariat before her son was shot.

The injured man, who spoke from his hospital bed, also alleged that he was shot while attempting to leave the family compound after security operatives arrived at their residence.

He further claimed that several other residents sustained injuries from stray bullets during the operation.

In another incident, the family of Ezenagu John Paul Ikechukwu alleged that he had remained in detention since March 2026 without being charged in court.

They accused operatives of demanding and collecting millions of naira while allegedly subjecting him to torture and unlawful detention.

Other reported incidents include allegations of property destruction during security operations in Awada, the killing of a young man in Mgbakwu that triggered public protests, the alleged killing of three construction workers in Orumba South Local Government Area, and claims that a female National Youth Service Corps member was assaulted during a security raid in Oba.

A viral video circulating online in June also drew public attention after it allegedly showed operatives assaulting a resident with a machete, further fuelling concerns over the conduct of some members of the security outfits.

The reports have intensified calls from civil society organisations and human rights advocates for transparent and independent investigations into the allegations. They maintain that while the fight against insecurity is necessary, security operations must comply with the law and respect the constitutional rights of citizens.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo established Operation Udo Ga Achi and the Agunechemba security architecture as part of efforts to combat crime and restore peace across Anambra State. The security initiative was introduced with the deployment of technology driven surveillance and coordinated community based security operations.

As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Government and the leadership of the security outfits had not publicly responded to the latest allegations. The claims remain allegations and have not been determined by any court or independent investigation.
