Two Killed in Suspected Cult Clash in Anambra, Police Yet to Comment
A suspected cult related attack has claimed the lives of two people, including an innocent child, in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident reportedly occurred on the night of July 18, 2026, when unidentified gunmen allegedly attacked a man identified as Ebuka, who was said to have recently left a restaurant after having a meal with his brother.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants trailed Ebuka on his motorcycle before opening fire on him, killing him at the scene. A young boy identified as Smart was also reportedly struck during the attack and died, although the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain unclear.
Residents alleged that the attack may have been linked to an ongoing rivalry between two suspected cult groups operating in the area. The incident has been described by locals as a possible reprisal following the killing of another suspected cult member in Okija in June.
The latest violence has thrown the community into mourning, particularly following reports that Ebuka recently became a father, leaving behind a wife and young child.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident, and the claims regarding the motive for the attack and the identities or affiliations of those involved remain unverified.
The incident has renewed concerns over cult related violence in parts of Anambra State, with residents calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and prevent further attacks.
Community leaders have also urged young people to shun cultism, warning that involvement in criminal groups often leads to tragic consequences for individuals, families and entire communities.
