Widower Who Lost Wife, Six Children in Attack Remarries Six Months Later

A Kano widower, Haruna Bashir, has taken a major step towards rebuilding his life after losing his wife and six children in a brutal attack six months ago.

Bashir was among 1,500 couples who participated in a mass wedding organised by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

For the widower, the ceremony marked a new beginning following the devastating loss that left him without his immediate family.

Bashir lost his wife, Fatima Abubakar, 35, and their six children in an attack at their home in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano, on January 17, 2025.

The victims were identified as Maimuna, 17, Aisha, 16, Bashir, 13, Abubakar, 10, Faruk, 7, and Abdulsalam, who was barely one and a half years old.

The family was reportedly attacked after assailants broke into their home and allegedly used dangerous weapons against the victims.

Three principal suspects, including a family member, were subsequently arrested by the Kano State Police Command in connection with the gruesome killings.

According to the Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, Bashir became withdrawn following the tragedy and rarely interacted with people.

He said the mass wedding had provided an opportunity for Bashir to gradually reconnect with society and begin another chapter of his life.

The mass wedding, which brought together hundreds of couples, was part of the Kano State Government’s intervention aimed at supporting marriage and reducing the financial burden associated with weddings.

For Bashir, however, the occasion carried a much deeper meaning as he stepped forward to rebuild his life after an unimaginable personal tragedy.
