South East States, Neighbouring South South States Planning Regional Railway Network – Otti

South East states and some neighbouring South South states are exploring the development of a regional railway network to improve transportation, connectivity and economic integration across the region.

The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, disclosed this during the July edition of his monthly media chat in Umuahia, explaining that the proposed rail network would connect major cities and economic centres, including Port Harcourt, Aba, Enugu, Imo and Akwa Ibom.

According to the Governor, the initiative would provide a more efficient and economically viable transportation system for businesses, residents and travellers across the region, while also strengthening regional trade and economic cooperation.

Governor Otti revealed that the Abia State Government had initially engaged a Chinese company to design a light rail system for the state. However, the project was later suspended after the government began considering a broader regional railway network involving neighbouring states.

He explained that a regional approach would deliver greater economic benefits, particularly if the proposed network is integrated with the existing Port Harcourt to Maiduguri railway, which passes through Aba.

The Governor said the integration would improve connectivity between major commercial centres, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and strengthen economic activities across the South East and neighbouring South South states.

Governor Otti explained that the decision to pursue the broader regional railway plan was responsible for the delay in implementing Abia’s earlier light rail proposal.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, improved transportation and stronger regional collaboration as part of efforts to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of residents.
