Nigeria at 66: FG Says Reforms Paving Way For Growth, Prosperity

By Princess-Ekwi Ajide

The Federal Government says Nigeria is moving from economic reforms and stabilisation towards stronger growth, increased production and broader prosperity, while acknowledging that significant challenges remain.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this in Abuja during a world press conference to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Idris said the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration were beginning to strengthen the economy, citing an increase in real Gross Domestic Product growth from 4.23 per cent in the second quarter of 2025 to 4.43 per cent in the corresponding quarter of 2026.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the government’s priority was to consolidate the gains of the reforms and ensure that ordinary Nigerians benefit from emerging economic opportunities.

Akume noted that the government was working to improve revenue generation and public finances while investing in infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare and social protection.

The Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, also reported improved access to farmlands in areas previously affected by insecurity, alongside government support for farmers through the provision of fertilisers and improved seeds.

The conference provided an opportunity for the Federal Government to reflect on Nigeria’s 66 years of independence and outline its economic, security and development priorities for the years ahead.
