Soludo Unveils Community Governance Reform, Declares War on Environmental Threats

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building stronger and better organized communities through a solution based approach, announcing plans to formally recognise communities as the fourth tier of governance in Anambra State while declaring flooding and gully erosion as urgent environmental emergencies requiring collective action.

Speaking during a meeting with the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council at the Light House, Awka, Governor Soludo disclosed that the state government is preparing a new Community Administration Law that will clearly define every recognised community within each local government area. He explained that the initiative follows the Supreme Court judgment that resolved lingering disputes over autonomous communities and is designed to provide a more effective framework for grassroots administration and community development.

The Governor said the proposed law will eliminate persistent conflicts arising from the existence of multiple town unions within some communities, noting that town unions are voluntary associations and should not create governance challenges. He described the reform as part of his administration’s broader effort to deepen grassroots governance, promote peace and accelerate development across communities.

Governor Soludo also raised serious concerns over the growing threat of flooding and gully erosion, describing them as the greatest environmental dangers facing Anambra State. He warned that the state is steadily losing valuable land to erosion and stressed that the challenge has reached a level that demands urgent and coordinated intervention from government, traditional institutions and residents.

He blamed indiscriminate sand mining, poor waste disposal, blocked drainage channels and the uncontrolled discharge of runoff water onto roads for worsening erosion and flooding across the state. The Governor called for immediate desilting of drainage systems, stricter environmental protection measures and greater public responsibility to safeguard lives, infrastructure and communities.

Governor Soludo urged traditional rulers to champion environmental protection in their domains, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved through responsible environmental practices. He maintained that his administration will continue to pursue practical and lasting solutions that strengthen communities, protect the environment and improve the quality of life for all Ndi Anambra.
