NUJ Demands State of Emergency on Anambra Roads, Warns of Impending Disaster

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, has called on the state government to declare a state of emergency on some critical internal roads, warning that their deplorable condition is increasingly putting residents, motorists and businesses at risk.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Union’s August Congress held at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, Awka.

The journalists specifically raised alarm over the condition of the Ogidi axis of the old Onitsha Road, where persistent flooding has reportedly created an artificial lake that affects buildings and makes the road difficult, and at times impossible, for motorists and other road users to navigate during the rainy season.
The Congress said the situation requires urgent government intervention, particularly as residents continue to suffer the consequences of flooding and poor road infrastructure.
It also called for immediate rehabilitation of the road leading to the College of Health Sciences, Nnewi, noting that the poor condition of the route affects staff, students and members of the public who use the road daily.

The NUJ urged the state government to treat the affected roads as an emergency rather than allow the situation to deteriorate further.
The Union’s intervention comes amid growing concerns over the impact of bad roads and flooding on movement, businesses, education and the safety of residents across the state.
