Nigerian Air Force Boosts Indigenous Air Defence Capacity, Graduates First Fighter Controllers

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s indigenous air defence capability with the graduation of 10 officers from the maiden Initial Air Defence Control Course 1/2026.
The four week course, organised by the Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC), was held from 20 July to 14 August 2026 and equipped the participants with foundational knowledge and practical skills required to function as fighter controllers and support air defence operations.
The graduation ceremony, held on Friday, 14 August 2026, marked a significant milestone in the history of the Nigerian Air Force, as it was the first time personnel were trained in house for the specialised function.
The training programme combined classroom lectures with practical exercises, demonstrations, syndicate discussions and radar practicals. Participants also received a lecture on the Nigerian Army Air Defence Organisation and undertook a study tour of the 101 Air Defence Group in Makurdi to gain practical insight into air defence operations.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Commandant of ATSTC, Air Vice Marshal NB Folaji, presented certificates of completion to the 10 graduands and recognised the best graduating student for outstanding performance.
AVM Folaji described the successful completion of the course as a landmark achievement, stressing the importance of developing highly skilled personnel capable of contributing effectively to the protection of Nigeria’s airspace.
He noted that air defence personnel play a critical role in safeguarding the nation’s airspace, protecting national sovereignty and strengthening Nigeria’s overall defence capability.
The Commandant commended the graduands for their commitment throughout the training and charged them to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and operational readiness as they take on their responsibilities.
He also expressed appreciation to the Chief of the Air Staff for his leadership, foresight and support, which he said contributed significantly to the successful conduct of the maiden course.
The graduation further underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to developing specialised manpower and strengthening local expertise in critical areas of air power and national defence.
