Group Embarks On Peace Walk, Calls For Inclusion Of Women, Youths In Peace Building

The Women Centre for Self Empowerment and Development, WOCSED, has embarked on “peace walk” to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace.
Starting from St. Matthew’s Catholic Church Amawbia, members of the group, while urging people to “Act now for a peaceful world”, and calling for peace in homes, communities, the state and society in general, went through Eke Awka, Regina Caeli Hospital road, Aroma Junction and ended the “peace walk” at ABS Corporate Headquarters in Awka.
Speaking before the commencement of the “peace walk”, the President of ‘Flame of Peace’, a subsidiary of WOCSED, Ambassador Onyeka Obi, noted that more than the absence of war, peace is the presence of justice, respect, understanding, tolerance, unity and love among people, adding that the theme of the event, “Invest in peace – for everyone, everywhere, everyday”, reminds all that peace must become part of everyday life, and not what should be talked about only on one special day.
She called for greater opportunities for women and youths to participate meaningfully in peacebuilding, leadership, education and community development, noting that without peace, development becomes difficult, just as women and children suffer most when conflict occurs.
International Day of Peace is celebrated annually on 21st September, and in Anambra, officials of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps joined WOCSED in the “peace walk” to mark the 2026 edition of the event.
UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, on this year’s edition of the International Day of Peace, called on all to be inspired by the courage of those who champion peace in neighbourhoods, classrooms and communities, and urged call on world leaders to invest in a peaceful future for all people.
