Abia Police Rescue Four Day Old Baby, Mentally Challenged Mother From Suspected Traffickers
The Abia State Police Command has rescued a four day old baby and her mentally challenged mother from an alleged child theft and trafficking syndicate.
Police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said four suspects were arrested on September 16 following credible intelligence and a police investigation by operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit, Rapid Response Unit, Obehie.
The suspects were identified as 48 year old Gladys Nathaniel, 47 year old Victor Udochukwu, 59 year old Chijioke Obunwa and 43 year old Onyeonoro Chinwe.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly conspired to steal the newborn from her mentally unstable mother and subsequently sold the baby to another person.
Chinaka said the mother has since been reunited with her family for proper care and medical attention, while the baby has been handed over to the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody.
The four suspects remain in police custody as investigation continues at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The command said they would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
