FG Unveils New NYSC Structure to Boost Skills, Jobs, National Development
The Federal Government has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps, introducing a new structure aimed at equipping Nigerian graduates with practical skills, improving employability and aligning national service with the country’s workforce and economic needs.
The reform, approved by the Federal Executive Council, marks the first comprehensive review of the NYSC scheme since its establishment in 1973. It introduces a six week orientation programme, specialised career training, improved deployment procedures and major changes to camp administration and graduation.
Under the new arrangement, the orientation exercise will be expanded from three weeks to six weeks and divided into three phases. The first phase will focus on civic responsibility, leadership and national values, while the second phase will provide corps members with training in financial literacy, business planning, career development and entrepreneurship. The final phase will concentrate on specialised training based on each participant’s chosen career path.
A key feature of the reform is the introduction of 11 specialised service streams. Corps members will select from Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, Tech and Digital Corps, Legal Corps, Public Service Corps, Infrastructure Corps, Green Corps, Enterprise Corps, Creative Economy Corps and Paramilitary and Security Corps. The specialised training is expected to prepare graduates with practical knowledge relevant to their professions and national development priorities.
The new policy also introduces a more security conscious deployment process, ensuring that the posting of corps members takes prevailing security conditions across the country into account. This is expected to improve the safety and welfare of participants during their service year.
In another significant change, the NYSC will now be headed by a civilian administrator, while the military will continue to provide security support at orientation camps nationwide. The reform also replaces the traditional Passing Out Parade with a graduation ceremony and introduces a redesigned NYSC uniform to reflect professionalism and national pride.
To improve the quality of orientation camps across the country, the Federal Government will introduce a national grading and certification system to ensure uniform standards in facilities and training.
The reforms are expected to transform the NYSC into a more career focused national service programme that prepares young Nigerians with practical skills, enhances entrepreneurship, supports job creation and contributes to national development. The Federal Government is also taking steps to amend the NYSC Act to provide the necessary legal backing for the new framework.
