Enugu police arrest five for alleged vandalism of public infrastructure

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested five suspects in three separate operations over the alleged vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, including a solar street light, road traffic signs and materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, October 5, 2026.

According to the statement, two suspects, Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, were arrested on September 27 at a scrap dump in New Artisan Market, Enugu, while allegedly negotiating the sale of a stolen solar street light.

Police operatives from New Haven Division reportedly recovered the solar street light and, during interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to vandalising and stealing it earlier that day at Graceland Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu.

In a separate operation on September 24, operatives of Abakaliki Road Police Division arrested 35 year old Chukwudi Nwigbo along Abakaliki Road, GRA, Enugu, following a distress alert from the Enugu State Command and Control Centre.

The Police said Nwigbo and an accomplice, who escaped, were detected by the security surveillance system while allegedly removing road traffic signs.

Several vandalised road signs bearing different inscriptions were reportedly recovered from the suspect.

Similarly, on September 15, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested two suspects identified as 31 year old Zubairu Hamanpedimso and 21 year old Mohamed Adamu.

The two suspects were arrested for allegedly conspiring to vandalise and steal materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.

Police said a bag containing iron materials, bolts and nuts allegedly vandalised and stolen from the corporation was recovered from the suspects.

The Command said all five suspects had been arraigned in court and remanded in correctional custody pending further hearing.

It added that efforts were ongoing to arrest other accomplices still at large.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the Police operatives and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group for their prompt response, which led to the arrests and recovery of the suspected stolen items.

He urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information on activities capable of undermining public assets and security.
