Eight Year Old Dies as Commercial Bus Overturns In Awka

An eight year old child has died while several passengers sustained injuries after a fully loaded commercial bus overturned at Anabel Event Centre, Awka, Anambra State.
The accident occurred on Sunday, October 4, 2026, when the commercial bus, owned by the Transport Company of Anambra State, TRACAS, was travelling from Nnewi to Enugu with 14 passengers on board.
The Anambra State Fire Service said it received an emergency call at about 3:30pm reporting the accident and immediately mobilised personnel to the scene.
According to the Fire Service, its personnel secured the area and assisted in the rescue and evacuation of the victims.
Several passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were evacuated to the hospital for medical attention.
The eight year old child, however, died in the accident.
The Fire Service said the vehicle sustained damage to some parts but there was no fire outbreak at the scene.
Personnel also took safety measures to prevent any secondary incident and remained at the scene until the situation was brought under control and the area was considered safe.
The responding team left the scene at about 5:45pm.
The Anambra State Fire Service urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution, avoid excessive speed and remain vigilant, particularly when transporting passengers.
