The Ebonyi Unity Forum in Anambra State has condemned two separate killings in Aguata Local Government Area of the state, involving a young woman identified as Miss Mmesoma of Uga and an 18-year-old boy at Ora-Eri, calling for thorough investigations and justice for the victims.
Recall that Mmesoma was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, identified as Ofoke Emmanuel Chima, from Ebonyi State, over allegations that she wanted to abandon him for another man after he had invested heavily in her wellbeing.
The teenager, on the other hand, was reportedly killed by his father, John Ezeh, an indigene of Ebonyi State.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Chief Moses Ofoke, and Secretary, Comrade Aloke Nnabuike, the forum described the incidents as disturbing and condemnable, stressing that no relationship dispute, provocation or family misunderstanding could justify the taking of human life.
It disclosed that its representatives had visited the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Anambra to seek information and engage with the relevant authorities over the incidents.
The forum subsequently convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the cases and its position.
The statement said the forum was calling on the Anambra State Police Command, the State CID and other relevant security agencies to conduct comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigations into both deaths and ensure that anyone found culpable was prosecuted in accordance with the law.
It also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, particularly the mother and other relatives of the teenager, while expressing sympathy over the loss of their loved ones.
The forum, however, cautioned against generalising the alleged actions of individuals to the entire Ebonyi population, insisting that the incidents did not represent the values of the people of the state.
It reaffirmed the commitment of Ebonyi indigenes living in Anambra to peaceful coexistence and cordial relations with their host communities.
The organisation further appealed to residents of Uga and Ora-Eri, community leaders, youths and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continue.
It warned against retaliation, the circulation of unverified information and inflammatory comments capable of escalating tensions, urging traditional rulers and other stakeholders to work together to preserve peace.
The forum reiterated that violence was unacceptable and called for accountability, justice and the protection of human life, expressing confidence that the relevant authorities would handle the cases professionally.
