Anambra Woman Raises Alarm Over Husband’s Arrest, Alleges Threat to His Life

A woman from Uli in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mrs Ifeoma Onyemee, has raised concerns over the arrest and detention of her husband, Chimobi Onyemee, alleging that the development may be linked to a petition he previously submitted against two operatives of the Agunechemba security outfit.
Mrs Onyemee, who spoke with journalists on Sunday, September 6, alleged that her husband petitioned the Anambra State Commissioner of Police and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security on July 24, accusing two security operatives, Kenneth Obiwulu, also known as Udo, and AK Irobi, known as AK, of various alleged abuses in Uli.
She claimed that the petition included allegations of unlawful detention, extortion, extra judicial killings and destruction of property, among others. She said her husband took the step after his property was allegedly destroyed and he received threats to his life.
According to her, her husband was subsequently arrested after allegedly being lured through a friend and taken to the Rapid Response Squad facility in Awkuzu, where he was accused of killing a man in Uli in 2022.
Mrs Onyemee questioned why the alleged murder had not previously resulted in a police report, wanted notice or other known legal action against her husband, expressing fears that the allegation could be an attempt to silence him.
She further alleged that a woman was brought to Awka and Awkuzu on Sunday to identify her husband as the person responsible for the death of her husband four years ago.
Mrs Onyemee appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and relevant human rights organisations to intervene in the matter.
She also called for an investigation into the allegations contained in her husband’s earlier petition and the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Contacted for clarification, the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu, CSP Orebe Chidubem Mathew, confirmed that Chimobi Onyemee was in police custody but declined to provide further details.
Efforts to obtain comments from Kenneth Obiwulu and AK Irobi were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The allegations against the security operatives and the circumstances surrounding Onyemee’s arrest remain subject to investigation and should not be treated as established facts.
