Anambra Moves To Power Urban Water Operations With Solar Energy
The Anambra State Ministry of Power has commenced plans to provide the Anambra State Urban Water Assets Holding Corporation, ASUWAHC, with a solar powered energy system aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening water service delivery across the state.
The initiative followed a request by the Officer in Charge of ASUWAHC, Mrs. Emmanuella Okafor, to the Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Casmir Chinenye Agummadu, for government support towards securing a reliable and sustainable alternative power source for the corporation.
In response, the commissioner directed the ministry’s Electrical Department to conduct a comprehensive technical assessment of ASUWAHC’s facilities to determine the feasibility and requirements for installing a solar power system.
The assessment, conducted on July 22, was led by Engr. Ebuka Dimaka alongside a team of engineers from the Ministry’s Electrical Department. The team worked with ASUWAHC technical officers, led by Engr. Francis C. Udoh and Engr. Barth Ekpenye, to inspect the corporation’s existing electrical infrastructure and operational facilities.
The assessment focused on the corporation’s energy consumption needs, existing electrical infrastructure, suitable locations for solar installation and other technical requirements necessary for the successful implementation of the project.
When implemented, the proposed solar energy system is expected to reduce ASUWAHC’s dependence on the national grid, lower operational costs and ensure more reliable power for its administrative and technical operations.
Mrs. Okafor expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for Power and Water Resources for his prompt response to the corporation’s request, describing the proposed project as a strategic investment that would significantly improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
She said the adoption of renewable energy reflects ASUWAHC’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and the provision of reliable water services to the people of Anambra State.
The technical assessment represents a significant step in the corporation’s efforts to modernise its operations through clean energy solutions, with the proposed solar project expected to strengthen institutional capacity and support more sustainable water service delivery across the state.
