Anambra Expands Solar Energy Drive to Bring Reliable Power to Communities

Thousands of residents across Anambra State are set to benefit from expanded access to reliable and affordable electricity as the Soludo administration intensifies the deployment of solar powered infrastructure to health centres, schools, water schemes, public institutions and communities under its Smart Anambra initiative.

The renewable energy programme is transforming the delivery of essential public services by providing uninterrupted power to Primary Health Centres, improving learning environments in schools, powering water facilities and reducing dependence on expensive diesel generators. The initiative is expected to improve healthcare delivery, lower operational costs and ensure more efficient public service across the state.

As part of the drive, the government has installed solar powered streetlights in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and along major roads to improve security, enhance road visibility and support economic activities after dark. The brighter streets have created a safer environment for motorists, traders and residents while reducing pressure on the national electricity grid.

The renewable energy programme has also reached rural communities through the installation of solar powered boreholes and community mini grids in areas that have experienced prolonged electricity shortages. Working closely with town unions, the state government has put in place a sustainable maintenance framework, while residents enjoy stable electricity through affordable and subsidised tariffs.

To deepen investment in clean energy, the Anambra State Government, through the Anambra State Investment Promotion Agency, ANSIPA, has created an enabling environment for private sector participation in renewable energy. The initiative is encouraging solar companies to provide affordable energy solutions for homes, markets and small and medium scale enterprises, helping businesses reduce operating costs while creating new employment opportunities.

In addition, ministries, departments and agencies are gradually adopting energy efficient technologies, including LED lighting and solar powered appliances, to reduce electricity consumption and lower the cost of running government facilities.

These interventions reflect Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s commitment to building a modern, environmentally sustainable and energy secure Anambra. By expanding access to clean and reliable electricity, the administration is improving public services, supporting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life of residents across the state.
