The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 40 year old man, Samson Ekata, over the alleged murder of his 18 year old pregnant girlfriend and the mutilation of her body in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed this while parading the suspect alongside other individuals arrested for various offences.
According to the police, the victim had reportedly lived with Ekata for about a year before the incident. The suspect allegedly killed her, severed one of her breasts and attempted to remove her unborn baby.
Speaking with journalists, Ekata reportedly admitted killing the teenager but claimed he was acting under spiritual influence. He also maintained that it was his first murder.
“I began hearing voices instructing me to kill her, but I initially resisted because she was pregnant,” the suspect said.
He claimed the instruction returned in a dream about two weeks later, after which he allegedly carried out the killing. He further claimed that the same spiritual influence instructed him to sever the victim’s breast.
Ekata reportedly disclosed that he transported the victim’s body in a Toyota Corolla before dumping it by the roadside. He denied killing anyone else.
Reacting to the incident, Daaor described the killing as horrific and expressed sadness over the death of the pregnant teenager. He commended community members whose assistance reportedly helped the police track down and arrest the suspect.
The commissioner assured residents that the suspect would face the full weight of the law and urged members of the public to provide credible information to security agencies to help prevent and combat crime.
He also called on parents to pay closer attention to their children’s safety, particularly girls, warning against the dangers posed by sexual predators and other individuals who may seek to exploit vulnerable people.
The case has raised fresh concerns about the safety of young women and the need for timely community reporting of suspicious activities. The suspect’s claims about spiritual influence remain his own account and do not establish the circumstances or motive of the alleged crime.
