In a fresh push against violent crime, Enugu State has provided 12 operational vehicles to a newly launched police unit tasked with strengthening the fight against violent criminals, improving emergency response and boosting intelligence driven policing.
The vehicles were commissioned on Wednesday during the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), an initiative of Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu. The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 13, Ukpo, Anambra State, Miller Gajere Dantawaye, represented the IGP at the ceremony.
Governor Peter Mbah, whose administration provided the vehicles, was represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Vincent Onyeabor. Speaking on behalf of the IGP, Dantawaye said the new vehicles would improve police mobility, accelerate responses to distress calls and strengthen intelligence led operations.
He charged officers of the new unit to justify the investment through professionalism, discipline and accountability, warning that the vehicles must be used strictly for legitimate police operations. He also emphasised respect for human rights and strict adherence to the rule of law.
The event attracted the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, senior police officers, traditional rulers, members of the Police Community Relations Committee, journalists and other stakeholders, highlighting the role of cooperation in addressing security challenges.
Zone 13 Police Headquarters said the development reflects the police leadership’s commitment to strengthening specialised crime response and building public confidence through effective policing and partnerships with government and communities.
