NSIB Begins Probe Into Enugu Air Incident At Benin Airport
An Enugu Air aircraft carrying 63 passengers and five crew members veered off the runway after landing at Benin Airport in Edo State on Thursday, July 23, 2026, prompting the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to launch an investigation into the incident.
The Embraer E170 aircraft, operating Flight 4264 from Lagos to Benin, reportedly ran beyond the end of Runway 05 at about 3:10 p.m. local time before coming to a stop in the surrounding bush.
Despite the frightening incident, all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated, with no injuries or fatalities reported.
Following the incident, the NSIB deployed its investigation team to the airport to preserve evidence, interview the flight crew and relevant personnel, examine the aircraft, assess runway conditions and review operational and technical records.
The NSIB Director General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., described the incident as a serious aviation occurrence that requires a thorough and independent investigation, while urging the public to avoid speculation until the findings are released.
The runway incident temporarily disrupted flight operations at Benin Airport, leading Air Peace to suspend all flights to and from the airport following the temporary closure of the runway.
The NSIB said a preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while the final investigation report and any safety recommendations will be released after the completion of the investigation.
