Soludo Intensifies Onitsha Main Market Regeneration as Major Works Gather Pace

Construction activities have gathered momentum at the Onitsha Main Market Regeneration Project as the Anambra State Government intensifies implementation of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s plan to transform the market into a cleaner, safer and more organised commercial hub.

During a joint inspection of the project on June 28, the Commissioner for Commerce, Mr Nonso Chukwuma Ebonwu, said the visit was aimed at assessing the pace of work, strengthening coordination among relevant ministries and ensuring quality delivery in line with the Solution Agenda.

According to the commissioner, contractors have commenced the removal of asbestos roofing at Gwongworo I and the excavation of drainage channels within the park area. He directed contractors to clear construction debris daily to reduce disruption to business activities, while arrangements are being made to provide lighting that will support night time construction.

Ebonwu further disclosed that survey and engineering teams are finalising site layouts and designs for public conveniences, clinic buildings and other facilities. He added that consultations with stakeholders are ongoing ahead of planned improvements along Bright Street and adjoining areas, where limited demolition may be required to create pedestrian walkways and improve accessibility. He assured traders that due process would be followed and adequate notice given before any demolition.

Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Hon. Chijioke Okpalaugo, praised Governor Soludo for fulfilling his promise to regenerate the market and expressed satisfaction with the pace of work. He assured the government of the continued cooperation of traders, expressing confidence that the project would enhance the market’s status as one of Africa’s leading commercial centres while improving the ease of doing business in Anambra State.
