Eighty three Nigerians are expected to return to Nigeria from South Africa on Wednesday following growing concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the returnees would depart the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 3:35pm local time and arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 8:45pm.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the latest repatriation was facilitated and sponsored by private individuals who provided funds for the returnees’ air tickets.
The development comes after the Federal Government concluded its voluntary repatriation programme, which brought nearly 1,500 Nigerians back from South Africa amid concerns over rising xenophobic attacks.
The ministry said the government remained committed to protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians at home and abroad, stressing that citizens in the diaspora remain important contributors to national development.
It also called on the private sector, corporate organisations, state governments and well meaning Nigerians to support humanitarian initiatives aimed at assisting citizens facing difficulties abroad.
The Federal Government further reaffirmed its commitment to working with South Africa and other host countries to address the root causes of Afrophobia and prevent violence and discrimination against Nigerians.
The government said it would continue to condemn attacks against Nigerians abroad and pursue diplomatic measures to ensure the safety and dignity of its citizens.
