60 Arrested Over Allegedly Assaulting Police Constable in Calabar

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested 60 people, including traders at Watt Market in Calabar, over the alleged assault and manhandling of a police constable.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, following an incident involving the officer at Goldie by Etim Edem Lane, Calabar.

According to the police, the constable had attempted to impound a motorcycle after it allegedly stepped on his leg while he was on duty. He said roadside traders intervened and helped the rider escape before allegedly turning on him.

The officer alleged that his uniform and shoes were torn, his Samsung mobile phone was taken, and his riot gun was tampered with during the incident. He also alleged that pepper and egg were poured on his face and body.

Police said a patrol team from Atakpa Police Division responded after receiving information from a concerned citizen and rescued the officer.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, directed officers to gather intelligence, identify those involved and prosecute anyone found culpable in accordance with the law.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said patrol and surveillance teams were reinforced by operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit, who arrested the 60 suspects.

He added that the suspects are undergoing screening and interrogation, while efforts are continuing to identify and arrest other persons allegedly involved in the incident.
