Tinubu Approves Up To 80% Salary Increase For Nigerian Military Personnel

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with the new pay structure taking effect from September 1, 2026.

According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, about 250,000 military personnel will benefit from the salary adjustment, with junior ranks receiving the highest percentage increase.

Under the new structure, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent increase. Personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer will earn 50 per cent more, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent salary increase.

The statement said the new salary package will increase the Armed Forces’ annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.

President Tinubu said the salary review reflects the government’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by military personnel in tackling terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, stressing that those who protect the nation deserve adequate support and recognition.
