Peter Obi Disowns Letter To Obi Of Onitsha, Urging Igbo Leaders To Unite
Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has disowned a letter circulating on social media which was purportedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.
The letter, dated September 19, 2026, and titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak,” purportedly appealed to traditional rulers, political leaders and elders to promote unity and ensure that disagreements over Anambra State’s finances were resolved through documentary evidence and transparency.
The document also referenced recent exchanges involving the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and questions over the financial records and liabilities of the state.
In the purported letter, the writer called for Anambra’s financial records to be opened for scrutiny, stating: “Let the records be opened. Let the books be examined. Let every legitimate question be answered with evidence.”
It further appealed to Igbo leaders to prevent political disagreements from becoming divisions among the people, stressing that the interests of Anambra and the wider Igbo community should take precedence over individual differences.
However, Obi has rejected the document, saying he did not write it and that the signature attached to it was forged.
In a statement on Saturday, Obi described the letter as “entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public.”
He urged members of the public and the media to disregard the document.
Obi said his attention remained focused on national development and accountability, rather than what he described as fabricated publications.
The controversy comes amid an ongoing dispute between Obi and the Soludo administration over the financial position of Anambra State at the end of Obi’s tenure as governor in 2014.
The state government has said outstanding obligations linked to external loan facilities from that period remain, while Obi has disputed the characterisation of his administration’s financial record.
The purported letter had been presented as a communication from Obi and bore the branding “Movement Obi/Kwankwaso 2027.”
Some platforms including Sahara Reporters initially treated it as genuine before Obi’s denial emerged.
