NSCDC Deploys Personnel to First Niger Bridge as Repair Works Begin

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Anambra State Command, says it has deployed adequate security personnel to the First Niger Bridge and adjoining areas ahead of the emergency repair works scheduled to begin on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The State Commandant, Commandant Maku Olatunde, disclosed this on Sunday while reviewing the Command’s operational plans at its headquarters in Awka, saying the deployment is aimed at protecting the bridge, workers and equipment throughout the two week repair period.

Commandant Maku said the Corps has mobilised both armed and unarmed personnel to provide round the clock security around the project site, while working with other security agencies to ensure the repair exercise proceeds without disruption.

He explained that the deployment is in line with the NSCDC’s statutory responsibility of protecting critical national, state and local government assets and infrastructure, describing the rehabilitation of the bridge as important to restoring safe and smooth interstate connectivity.

The Commandant said traffic diversion routes had been mapped out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and other relevant agencies, advising motorists to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, during the closure.

He urged motorists and commuters to obey diversion signs, cooperate with security and traffic officials and remain patient throughout the period, warning that anyone caught vandalising government property or obstructing the contractor would be arrested and prosecuted.

The emergency maintenance of the First Niger Bridge is scheduled to run from Monday, September 7 to Monday, September 21, 2026.
