Placards bearing messages such as “One Nigeria, One Vote = Tinubu 2027,” “No More ASUU Strike,” “This Is My Renewed Hope” and “The New Tax Reform Bill Favours Me” featured prominently at the reopening of the Niger Bridge, reflecting the political and policy messages expressed by some participants.

The bridge, a major transport link between Onitsha in Anambra State and Asaba in Delta State, reopened on October 15, 2026, after about 13 days of closure, drawing commendations from youth leaders and community representatives who praised the infrastructure intervention and called for attention to other roads in the region.

Anambra State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Comrade Nonso Henry, described the reopening as a source of relief, particularly for residents of Obosi and neighbouring communities affected by traffic diversions through the Atani Road axis.

Henry commended the authorities for completing the intervention within the announced period, describing the reopening as an important development for businesses and residents who depend on the bridge for movement between the two states.

He, however, called for attention to the Obosi Interchange and adjoining federal roads, warning that the area could experience renewed traffic difficulties whenever the bridge or its approaches require major repairs.

On the political implications of the infrastructure projects, Henry praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing road construction and rehabilitation projects across parts of the South East.

“As State Chairman of the Youth Council of Anambra State, I travel a lot within the South East, and I have seen wonderful roads coming from Enugu down to Onitsha,” he said, adding that he believed the infrastructure interventions would influence political support in the region.

The youth leader also expressed support for Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s call for the state to participate in important national decisions, saying he believed such engagement could help attract further development projects.

A community representative from Asaba, Professor Epiphany Chigbogu Arinze, also commended the bridge intervention, describing it as a significant effort to strengthen a critical link connecting the South East and South South.

Arinze urged the Federal Government to ensure that other ongoing road projects were completed promptly, noting that the bridge was important to economic activities across the two regions.

He described the intervention as an expression of the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda and called for similar attention to other infrastructure needs.

Igwe Oranu Chris Chidume also praised the bridge works, describing the project as a catalyst for business and economic activities across the South East and South South. He called attention to other federal roads in Anambra State that he said required urgent intervention.

While the reopening has brought immediate relief to bridge users, calls for further repairs to adjoining roads highlight the continuing infrastructure needs of communities that depend on the route for commerce, travel and daily activities.
