Lagos Impounds 175 Vehicles Over Illegal Number Plates
The Lagos State Government has impounded 175 vehicles for violating regulations on the use of vehicle number plates, particularly the unauthorised use of dealer number plates.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday, saying the enforcement was carried out by the Vehicle Inspection Service as part of efforts to improve compliance and safety on Lagos roads.
Osiyemi warned motorists and vehicle dealers that dealer number plates are not meant for permanent or everyday use. He said recovered dealer plates would be confiscated, while the affected vehicles would undergo further investigation.
Under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, dealer plates are restricted to activities such as authorised test drives, vehicle inspections, vehicle delivery or collection, and movement of unregistered vehicles from ports or approved dealer premises.
The Commissioner warned that vehicles using fake, obscured or improperly displayed registration numbers would also face impoundment and prosecution, stressing that the enforcement is aimed at ensuring proper vehicle identification, accountability and safer roads across Lagos.
