Khaki Out as FG Approves Adire Uniform for NYSC

The Federal Government has announced that the iconic khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps will be replaced with Adire fabric as part of wide ranging reforms approved for the 53 year old scheme.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. He said the decision is aimed at promoting local production, supporting Nigerian textile manufacturers, and ensuring government spending benefits the country’s economy.

According to the minister, the Adire fabric will be sourced from local textile producers in states including Ogun and Kwara, in line with the government’s policy of encouraging indigenous industries.

The reform package, approved by the Federal Executive Council on Monday, also introduces a new deployment system that will see corps members posted based on their academic qualifications and career paths.

Under the new arrangement, graduates trained as teachers, for example, will receive relevant orientation camp training before being deployed to schools where their skills are most needed.

The government is also reviewing the deployment policy to address security concerns. The new approach will prioritise posting corps members to states where they studied or are familiar with the environment, especially in areas facing security challenges.

According to the minister, the policy is expected to reduce the need for redeployment, improve the safety of corps members, address concerns raised by parents, and make the NYSC scheme more impactful through skill based placements.
