Customs Intercept Wildlife Trafficking Ring, Rescue Two Lion Cubs At Abuja Airport
The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted an alleged international wildlife trafficking operation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, rescuing two live lion cubs and arresting three suspects.
The operation, conducted on August 4, 2026, was carried out by the Special Wildlife Office of the Customs Intelligence Unit in collaboration with other Customs units and conservation partner, Focused Conservation, following credible intelligence on the movement of the animals from Kano through Abuja to Congo Brazzaville.
Customs operatives reportedly discovered the cubs after hearing animal sounds from the rear compartment of a black SUV during an inspection at the airport’s Cargo Terminal. The two lion cubs were found concealed in crates, leading to the arrest of the alleged owner, the vehicle driver and a Customs clearing agent.
The Officer in Charge of the Special Wildlife Office, Assistant Comptroller of Customs Anuhu Mani, said the suspects were being interrogated to uncover other members of the alleged trafficking syndicate, stressing that Nigeria would not be allowed to become a transit route for illegal wildlife trade.
The rescued cubs have been handed over to the Greenfingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative for veterinary care and rehabilitation, while the Customs Service said the operation underscores its commitment to tackling wildlife trafficking and other forms of organised environmental crime.
