Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an illustrious 23-year journey with the Portugal national team.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner announced his decision in an emotional farewell letter addressed to the Portuguese people, reflecting on his remarkable career, achievements, sacrifices and the privilege of representing his country.
Ronaldo, who made his senior international debut in August 2003, said the time had come to hand over the national team shirt and captain’s armband to the next generation.
Describing the decision as an emotional one, the 41-year-old footballer said his journey with Portugal had transformed his life, extending far beyond matches, goals, records and trophies.
He noted that his greatest memories were the people whose lives he touched through football, particularly Portuguese supporters across the world who found pride, unity and happiness in his performances.
Throughout his international career, Ronaldo established himself as one of the most influential figures in Portuguese football, leading the country through memorable victories, painful defeats and historic achievements.
In his farewell message, he acknowledged that although there were moments when he failed to meet expectations, he never stopped giving his best or feeling proud of representing Portugal.
He also expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, medical personnel, technical staff and family members for their sacrifices and contributions throughout his international journey.
Addressing the younger generation of Portuguese footballers, Ronaldo urged them to continue dreaming, pushing boundaries and believing in their ability to achieve greatness.
He further recalled the emotional experience of standing alongside his teammates as the Portuguese national anthem played, describing it as a moment when differences disappeared and the entire country united behind one passion — Portugal.
Reflecting on his legacy, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward said his greatest achievement was not necessarily becoming the world’s best player but earning the honour of representing what he described as the best country in the world.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to the Portuguese people for believing in him and allowing him to fulfil a childhood dream that began in Madeira.
“The number 7 shirt remains, but the pride of having worn it will be mine forever,” Ronaldo declared.
His announcement marks the end of an extraordinary international chapter that saw him become Portugal’s most celebrated football figure and one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
