Regina Caeli, UNIZIK Junctions: Tinubu’s Flyover Approvals Raise Hopes for Safer Roads in Awka

For commuters, pedestrians and motorists navigating some of Awka’s busiest junctions, road infrastructure is not just about smoother movement; it is also about safety and the protection of human lives.
That concern is at the centre of plans highlighted by Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, who disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved pedestrian flyovers or crossovers at Regina Caeli and UNIZIK junctions in Awka.
Ezeobi made the disclosure while explaining the Federal Government’s infrastructure interventions in Anambra and the wider South-East, describing the proposed facilities as important measures to address pedestrian accidents along the express corridor.
The proposed flyovers are expected to provide safer crossing points for pedestrians and reduce direct interaction between people crossing the road and fast-moving vehicles.
The Commissioner also highlighted other federal road investments affecting Anambra, including the Enugu–Awka–Onitsha highway reconstruction and the Second Niger Bridge access road project.
He attributed the growing federal infrastructure presence in the state to cooperation between President Tinubu’s administration and the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The proposed pedestrian facilities, if delivered, could provide significant relief to students, traders, workers and other residents who regularly cross the busy corridors.
However, the public will be looking for further details on the project designs, procurement, construction timelines and safety arrangements during execution.
Beyond the proposed flyovers, the broader infrastructure programme presents an opportunity to address persistent traffic and road safety challenges in Awka and improve connectivity across Anambra.
For residents preparing to assess political leadership and public service delivery, the practical questions remain clear: Will the approved projects be funded, completed on schedule and deliver the promised improvements to everyday life?
