CJN Warns New Judges Against Accepting Unsolicited Gifts, Lavish Birthday Celebrations
The has cautioned newly appointed judges of the lower courts against accepting unsolicited gifts or organising unnecessary birthday celebrations, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in the judiciary and expose judicial officers to petitions.
The Chief Justice gave the warning at the opening of an induction course for newly appointed judges. Represented by the Administrator of the , , she urged the judges to uphold the highest standards of integrity, impartiality and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
Justice Kekere-Ekun advised the new judges to resist every form of undue influence, stressing that unsolicited gifts, especially during birthday celebrations and other personal events, could create perceptions of bias and eventually lead to complaints or disciplinary petitions against judicial officers.
She also charged the judges to ensure the speedy, fair and impartial determination of cases, noting that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done in order to sustain public trust in the nation’s judicial system.
In his remarks, Justice Adejumo congratulated the new judges on their appointments, describing the elevation as a solemn responsibility that requires unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights. He explained that the induction programme was designed to equip them with practical knowledge of judicial ethics, courtroom management and the effective application of substantive and procedural laws as they begin their judicial careers.
