Babachir Lawal: Peter Obi Strongest 2027 Presidential Contender

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has described former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as the strongest contender ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in a recent interview, Lawal said Obi’s commitment to fairness and doing what is right distinguishes him from other major political figures expected to feature in the 2027 race.

According to him, “Peter Obi will try to be fair to everybody. Peter Obi will try to do that which is right.”

Assessing the major political figures in the emerging 2027 political landscape, the former SGF rated Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso highest at about 70 per cent each, while placing President Bola Tinubu at 50 per cent and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at zero.

Lawal also predicted that Atiku would lose the next presidential election, saying he does not believe the former Vice President has a realistic path to victory.

He described former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as a capable politician but criticised what he described as the politician’s “excessive ambition.”

The former SGF also reflected on President Bola Tinubu’s generosity before assuming office, alleging that the President had changed since taking office. He further criticised National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, claiming that he had observed character flaws in him dating back to their university days.

The remarks come amid growing political discussions, consultations and alliance building ahead of the 2027 general election, although official campaigns have yet to commence.
