Anambra Government, UNIDO Begin Drafting Work Plan on Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment, Waste Management

Stakeholders in the environmental, energy and renewable energy sector in Anambra State are currently in Awka for a two-day workshop as the Anambra State Government and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO, begin the development of a state-level implementation plan and guideline for National Policy on Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment (OGREE) Waste Management.

Anambra State is one of the five core states selected under the UNIDO Circular Economy Project which aims to improve management of used off-grid renewable energy equipment and plastics with circular economy practices for mitigation of pollution and Green House Gas emissions.

According to the project, it will support and strengthen policy and regulatory framework on promoting circular economy principles and practices, by developing one relevant policy instrument at Federal level and at targeted State level.

Declaring the workshop opened, Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi recounted the efforts of the Anambra State Government in switching to renewable energy, remarking that the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration is prioritizing the clean and green environment agenda to change the fortunes of the state.

He announced that the Governor has approved the creation of Climate Change Unit in the Ministry of Environment and conveyed the message of support and collaboration, saying that the state is ready to partner the organization to maximize the potential in clean and green energy.

Earlier in a welcome message, the National Field Coordinator, UNIDO Nigeria, Ms. Emem Umana said the project is to promote small hydropower development, circular economy approaches and advance Nigeria’s green and just transition to Net Zero through circular economy practices.

She explained that the National Policy on OGREE Waste management was developed, validated and is now currently under process of cabinet approval for effective adoption.
