ACTDA Reclaims Public Road, Demolishes Illegal Structures in Awka Crackdown

The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has intensified its enforcement against illegal developments with the demolition of structures obstructing a public access road in Umuike, Awka.
The operation, carried out on July 28, was led by the Commander of Enforcement, Mr. Jude Nworah, following repeated complaints that land grabbers and unauthorized developers had blocked the road, making movement difficult for residents and motorists.
During the exercise, the enforcement team pulled down the illegal structures that had encroached on the access road, restoring free movement within the community. According to ACTDA, the action came after several notices and warnings issued to the developers were ignored.
Residents who witnessed the demolition welcomed the intervention, describing it as a timely move to reclaim public infrastructure and restore order in the area.
Speaking after the operation, Mr. Nworah said the exercise underscores ACTDA’s commitment to enforcing the Awka Capital Territory Master Plan and protecting public infrastructure from illegal encroachment.
He warned that indiscriminate developments on public roads, drainage channels and designated setbacks not only violate planning regulations but also pose serious risks during emergencies and flooding.
The Authority stressed that no individual has the right to convert public infrastructure into private property, warning that similar enforcement exercises will continue across the capital territory.
ACTDA urged developers and landowners to obtain the necessary building approvals and strictly comply with approved planning regulations before commencing any construction.
The Authority maintained that adherence to the law remains the surest way to avoid demolition, financial losses and the environmental consequences associated with illegal developments.
The latest enforcement is part of ongoing efforts by the Anambra State Government to promote orderly urban development, preserve public infrastructure and ensure sustainable growth within the Awka Capital Territory.
