Maternal and newborn healthcare delivery in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has received a boost following the donation of medical equipment by Canada based medical doctor, Dr. Charles Kene Ojukwu.
The donation, made on October 11 through the Charles Kene Ojukwu Initiative Foundation, is aimed at improving access to essential healthcare services and supporting efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality in Abatete and neighbouring communities.
The presentation took place in the presence of the Archbishop of Onitsha and Metropolitan of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, who blessed the equipment and the donor.
The equipment donated to the Primary Health Centre at Christ the King Parish, Abatete, included a diagnostic ultrasound machine, phototherapy machine, cardiac monitor, autoclave, suction machine, oxygen cylinder with trolley, delivery bed, digital fetal Doppler and nebuliser. The intervention also covered labour and minor surgical equipment, as well as repainting of the health centre.

Explaining the significance of the donation, Ojukwu said the ultrasound machine would enable pregnant women to access scans at the facility, while the phototherapy machine would support the treatment of newborns with jaundice. He added that other equipment would assist healthcare workers with emergency care, sterilisation of instruments and essential delivery procedures.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, who represented the state government, commended the donor and called on individuals and organisations to support healthcare development through similar interventions.
The initiative aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s call for public private partnerships to accelerate development, particularly in essential services such as healthcare.
