Police Arrest Suspect, Recover Pump Action Gun and 11 Cartridges in Nnewi

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Okechukwu Igwegbe over suspected unlawful possession of a firearm and recovered a pump action gun and 11 live cartridges in Uruagu, Nnewi North Local Government Area.
The suspect was arrested on September 18, 2026, by operatives of the Command’s Tactical Team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Ezekiel Imoh, following credible intelligence.
The police said the recovered firearm and ammunition have been secured as exhibits and are undergoing further investigation. The suspect has reportedly declined to make a statement and has not provided information on the source of the firearm and ammunition.
According to the Command, investigators are working to establish the source and circumstances surrounding the possession of the weapon, including whether the recovered items are connected to any criminal activity or other persons. The investigation will involve forensic examination, ballistic tracing where applicable, intelligence review and interviews with relevant persons.
Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the Tactical Team for what he described as a vigilance and intelligence led intervention. He directed investigators to conduct a professional and thorough investigation while respecting the suspect’s constitutional and legal rights.
The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to tackling the circulation of illegal firearms and ammunition across Anambra State and urged residents to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime and protecting communities.
