The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-NAU) has commenced an indefinite strike action over the non-payment of the complete August 2026 salary to its members.
The union announced the decision in a press release dated Monday, September 7, 2026 and signed by the branch Chairperson, Comrade Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Comrade Osita Nnajiofor.
The statement said the follows the Congress of the union at which members resolved to withdraw their services in compliance with a standing resolution of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC).
According to the branch, the ASUU-NEC standing resolution empowers branches of the union to withdraw their services when salaries are not paid after the third day of the following month.
The union said that as of September 7, the university had yet to pay its members their complete salaries for August.
ASUU-NAU described the situation as the third time its members were experiencing what it called an “ugly and frustrating” delay in the payment of their salaries.
The union said the sole reason for the industrial action was the non-payment of the complete August 2026 salary, and appealed to the university authorities and the Visitor to the university, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently intervene and ensure that the outstanding salaries are fully paid.
The Congress resolution directs all ASUU-NAU members to immediately withdraw their academic and administrative services.
It further states that the withdrawal of services will continue until the complete payment of the August 2026 salary is made to all affected members.
