Fire Guts Duplex, Shuttle Bus in Awka, Property Worth Millions Lost
A fire outbreak on Saturday evening gutted a duplex near Mopol Base Junction, along the Old Amansea Awka Road in Anambra State, destroying household belongings, parts of the building and a shuttle bus parked within the compound.
The fire, which started at about 6pm in one of the apartments, reportedly spread rapidly to adjoining sections of the building before engulfing the vehicle.
The Anambra State Fire Service, which received the distress call at about 6:30pm, swiftly deployed personnel and firefighting equipment to the scene and successfully contained the blaze.
The Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, said the affected property included a duplex with a boys’ quarters apartment, adding that the fire damaged roofing materials, household furniture, sections of the walls and other structural components.
Chiketa said preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was caused by a power surge, while confirming that no life was lost and no injury was recorded.
He said the prompt intervention of the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining properties, with the operation completed and the scene secured before personnel withdrew at about 7:30pm.
The Fire Service urged residents to make distress calls promptly whenever they notice a fire outbreak, stressing that early emergency response remains critical to preventing fires from escalating and causing greater damage to lives and property.
